As the Software Engineer, you will apply basic technical, mathematical and scientific techniques and knowledge to evaluate software from other sources. You’ll design and implement software components that address specific business requirements, resulting in systems that achieve quantifiable measures of performance, quality, affordability, maintainability and simplicity. You will develop new software components, as well as create modifications for existing production software. As a part of the XPO team, you’ll have a starring role in helping us continue to provide daily freight solutions to our global customers.

What you’ll do on a typical day:

  • Design new software by applying techniques of computer science, engineering and mathematical analysis to satisfy the objectives stated in the business requirements
  • Develop new software using documented process and logic patterns, programming language constructs, data storage methods and operating environment interfaces
  • Deploy and implement fully-tested software solutions
  • Participate in developing appropriate programs and systems documentation according to established department standards; follow industry best practices and techniques and XPO’s standardized processes to deliver improved solutions
  • Evaluate the proper functioning and performance of software components using repeatable, reproducible and reportable software testing methodologies
  • Install and upgrade software development tools
  • Perform periodic 24/7 on-call support as required by the team’s rotational schedule

What you need to succeed at XPO:

At a minimum, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years of experience in software engineering, preferably in medium to large corporate environments or with commercial software companies
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks and preprocessors (Angular, React, SCSS, LESS)
  • Knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of common programming languages (C, C++, C#, Java, Visual Basic, JavaScript, TypeScript)
  • Experience with data marshalling, data transformation and data representation technologies (Model entities, JSON, HTML, XML, Stylesheets)

It’d be great if you also have:

  • 3 years of experience in software solutions development in medium to large corporate environments or with commercial software companies
  • Knowledge of industry standard IDEs (Eclipse, Visual Studio for Unix, Java and Windows)
  • Knowledge of process communication techniques (shared memory, message queues, semaphores, mutexes)
  • Knowledge of concurrent processing models, constructs, and techniques (threaded processes, thread synchronization, apartments, error recovery)
  • JavaScript, Angular 5 and TypeScript experience
  • Knowledge of transportation management software
