      Overview

 

At XPO, the Instructional Designer plays a critical role in building high-quality, scalable learning solutions that support employee capability, performance, and business outcomes. This role blends strong instructional design skills with hands-on content development and is ideal for a mid-level L&D professional who thrives in a fast-paced, stakeholder-driven environment.

The role is an individual contributor position, owning assigned workstreams end-to-end while collaborating closely with SMEs, program managers, and senior instructional designers.

What you’ll do on a typical day:

 

Instructional Design

  • Translating business and performance needs into learner-centered solutions using established instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, SAM).
  • Conduct learning needs analysis with internal stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Design clear learning objectives, instructional strategies, and assessment approaches aligned to defined outcomes.
  • Create storyboards, design documents, and learning maps for self-paced, virtual, and blended programs.
  • Ensure alignment with company learning standards, branding, accessibility, and quality guidelines.

 

Content Development

  • Develop engaging learning content including eLearning modules, facilitator guides, learner guides, job aids, assessments, and microlearning assets.
  • Use approved authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Rise/Storyline, Captivate, Premiere Pro, Aftereffects) to build digital learning experiences.
  • Write effective instructional copy, scenarios, scripts, and feedback text tailored to adult learners.
  • Incorporate interactivity, practice activities, and knowledge checks to reinforce learning.
  • Maintain and update existing learning assets based on feedback, business changes, or performance data.

 

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Partner with SMEs to extract, validate, and refine content efficiently.
  • Manage assigned deliverables, timelines, and review cycles with minimal supervision.
  • Incorporate stakeholder and QA feedback quickly while maintaining quality standards.
  • Collaborate with program leads and senior IDs to continuously improve learning effectiveness and efficiency.

 

 

 

Role Scope & Leveling

  • Operates independently on well-defined projects and contributes to moderately complex learning initiatives.
  • Applies standard instructional design practices with growing depth and confidence.
  • Requires limited guidance but escalates risks and dependencies appropriately.
  • Does not manage people but may support or informally guide junior team members.

What you need to succeed at XPO:

 

At a minimum, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Sciences, Communication, or a related field.
  • 3 to 6 years of experience in instructional design and/or learning content development within a corporate or professional environment.
  • Solid understanding of adult learning principles and instructional design best practices.
  • Proven hands-on experience developing digital learning content using industry-standard tools.
  • Strong written communication, attention to detail, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver on deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting global or distributed learners.
  • Familiarity with LMS platforms and basic learning metrics.
  • Experience designing learning for functional, technical, or leadership audiences.
  • Awareness of accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive learning practices.
  • Exposure to agile or iterative learning development approaches.
