Senior Storage & Backup Engineer (NetApp | Pure Storage | Rubrik)

Location: Pune/ Hyderabad (Hybrid)

Role Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Storage & Backup Engineer to own enterprise storage and data protection across NetApp ONTAP, Pure Storage FlashArray, and Rubrik ecosystems. This role covers 24×7 operations, incident response, capacity & performance management, and project deployments (migrations, refreshes, expansions, and DR). You will partner closely with Server, EUC, Network, and Security teams to maintain high availability, resilience, and compliance for business‑critical workloads.

Key Responsibilities

1) Day-to-Day Operations

• Administer and support NetApp ONTAP (FAS/AFF) and Pure Storage FlashArray platforms for block and file workloads; manage Rubrik CDM / Rubrik Security Cloud for backup & recovery.
• Provision, configure, and maintain LUNs/Volumes, NFS/SMB shares, export policies, igroups, quotas, and protection policies.
• Monitor capacity, performance (IOPS, latency, throughput, queue depth), and health; drive optimization and proactive remediation.
• Perform non-disruptive upgrades/patching, routine maintenance, and change management through established ITSM processes.
  
  

2) SAN/ Fabric

• Manage SAN zoning and fabric health on Brocade and/or Cisco MDS (WWN registration, ISLs, trunking/port‑channels, VSANs/LSANs, NPIV).
• Troubleshoot end‑to‑end FC paths and multipathing (PowerPath/Native MPIO) and remediate fabric contention or link issues.

3) Backup, Recovery & DR (Rubrik)

• Own Rubrik administration: SLA Domains, schedules, retention policies, replication, and immutable backups.
• Execute and document Instant/Live Mount restores (VMware, SQL, Oracle), Point‑in‑Time and file‑level restores; verify RPO/RTO compliance.
• Integrate Rubrik with VMware vSphere, NAS (SMB/NFS) filesets, and app‑aware backups; manage archive targets (S3/Azure/GCS) and CloudOut/CloudOn as applicable.
• Leverage Polaris / Rubrik Security Cloud features (e.g., ransomware detection and sensitive data discovery) to enhance cyber‑resilience.
• Plan and conduct DR tests, runbook validation, and post‑incident recovery reviews.
  
  

4) NetApp

• Operate ONTAP 9 in multi‑tenant environments (SVMs), FlexVol/FlexGroup, qtrees, quotas, Snapshot policies, and SnapMirror/SnapVault replication.
• Configure NFSv3/v4.1, SMB 3.x, and iSCSI/FC; manage DNS/AD/DFS-N dependencies and file data architectures across multiple Windows domains.
• Implement QoS, FabricPool tiering (object storage), SVM-DR/MetroCluster (if applicable), and use Active IQ / AutoSupport for health & predictive analytics.
• Enable application‑consistent data protection (e.g., SnapCenter or Rubrik app‑aware workflows) aligned to business SLAs.

5) Pure Storage

• Administer FlashArray (//X, //C, //XL) with Purity OS: volume/host/host‑group provisioning, Protection Groups, snapshots, and replication.
• Design and manage ActiveCluster (synchronous) and ActiveDR (asynchronous) for high availability and DR.
• Implement SafeMode snapshots and strong RBAC for ransomware resilience; manage Evergreen lifecycle and non‑disruptive controller/shelf upgrades.
• Integrate with VMware (VAAI/VASA, vVols), Microsoft (VSS), and databases (Oracle/SQL) following vendor best practices.
• Use Pure1 for capacity/performance analytics and predictive planning; automate via REST API / PowerShell / Python.

6) Security, Compliance & Governance

• Enforce least privilege, MFA, and RBAC across storage/backup platforms; manage encryption at rest and KMIP integrations where applicable.
• Maintain audit trails, ensure immutability/air‑gap strategies, and align with regulatory frameworks (ISO 27001, SOX, HIPAA where relevant).
• Own documentation, SOPs, and disaster recovery runbooks; contribute to architecture standards.

7) Collaboration & Process

• Partner effectively with Server, EUC, Network, DBA, and Security teams; drive RCA for P1/P2 incidents and preventive actions.
• Lead or contribute to migrations, tech refreshes, site expansions, and cloud archival initiatives.
• Good to have automation (PowerShell, Python, Ansible) and self‑service runbooks to reduce toil.

Required Qualifications

• 8–12+ years in enterprise Storage & Backup engineering/operations with strong experience across NetApp ONTAP, Pure Storage FlashArray, and Rubrik.
• SAN block storage operations with Brocade/Cisco fabrics; proficient in FC, iSCSI, SMB 3.x, NFSv3/v4.1, Secure NFS, DNS, DFS.
• Demonstrated experience with crash‑consistent and application‑consistent snapshots, asynchronous replication, and data retention/backup strategies to ensure availability and recoverability.
• Deep knowledge of enterprise file data architectures spanning multiple Windows domains; solid grasp of VLAN tagging, port‑channels, and routing for NAS architectures.
• Hands‑on with VMware vSphere, Windows/Linux, and scripting (PowerShell and/or Python) for operational automation.
• Strong communication, documentation, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.

Preferred/ Nice to Have

• Certifications: NetApp (NCDA/NCIE), Pure Storage (admin/architect level), Rubrik (CDM/Polaris), VMware (VCP), ITIL Foundation.
• Exposure to Kubernetes storage (CSI drivers, NetApp Trident), Ansible, Terraform, or GitOps workflows.
• Experience with ransomware readiness (immutability, air‑gap, SafeMode, anomaly detection) and zero‑trust principles.
• Familiarity with cloud object storage (AWS/Azure/GCP) for archival/tiering (e.g., FabricPool, Rubrik CloudOut).
• Knowledge of complementary backup products (Veeam, Commvault) and NDMP/Fileset strategies.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related—or equivalent hands‑on experience.
